🌿 White Bird of Paradise Unboxing
I recently got a new Bird of Paradise plant, and this one arrived in a big old box. Large plants can be a little awkward to unpack, but I’ve found the easiest way is to open the bottom of the box and carefully pull the box up and away from the plant.
That worked well here. Once I got it out of the box, the plant was already pretty tall and wrapped tightly in protective paper.
📦 How the Plant Was Packed
Costa Farms did a nice job packaging this plant. It was wrapped from top to bottom to protect the leaves during shipping, and the root ball was secured to keep the potting mix in place during transit.
The root ball was also wrapped in plastic to keep the potting mix in place during shipping.
I carefully cut the paper away so I could get a better look at it. Once the wrapping was off, I could see right away that this was a good-sized plant.
That is one thing I really like about ordering from Costa Farms is they ship larger indoor plants. They are very good at packing them for shipping too. You do not have to wait six months for a tiny plant to grow into your space.
🪴 First Look at the Plant
After removing the wrapping, the White Bird of Paradise looked healthy, full, and ready to display. It was already in a grow pot, and it also came with a white outer keeper pot to make it look nicer indoors.
This plant was about three feet tall right out of the box, which makes it a nice instant statement plant for a bright room, living room corner, office, or plant-filled apartment space.
It did not need much work after unpacking. I cleaned up the loose potting mix, checked the leaves, and gave it a light watering. After that, it was pretty much ready to go.
🌱 What Is a White Bird of Paradise?
The White Bird of Paradise is called Strelitzia nicolai. It is a large tropical plant known for its huge, banana-like leaves and upright growth habit.
There are different types of Bird of Paradise plants. The orange-flowering type is often grown outdoors in very bright light, while the White Bird of Paradise is the one you will often see used indoors as a large foliage plant.
It can flower, but indoors that is not very common. Honestly, that does not bother me much. The flowers are cool, but the real reason to grow this plant indoors is the leaves.
🍃 Why the Leaves Are the Main Attraction

The leaves are what make this plant special indoors. They are large, tropical, and dramatic without being fussy-looking.
A White Bird of Paradise can make a plain corner feel more finished almost instantly. It has that big tropical look that works well in modern rooms, bright apartments, offices, and indoor garden spaces.
As it grows, the leaves may naturally split a little. That is normal for Bird of Paradise plants and gives them that relaxed tropical look.
💧 What to Do After Unboxing
After unboxing a White Bird of Paradise, keep things simple. Do not rush to repot it the same day unless there is a serious problem with the pot or soil.
- Remove all packing materials from the plant and pot.
- Check the leaves for damage from shipping.
- Clean up any spilled potting mix.
- Check the soil moisture before watering deeply.
- Give the plant bright light and a little time to adjust.
Mine only needed a light watering and a little cleanup. With shipped plants, I usually like to let them settle in before doing anything too aggressive.
☀️ Basic Indoor Care Notes
White Bird of Paradise plants like bright indoor light. A spot near a bright window is usually best. They can handle some direct sun indoors, especially morning or filtered sun.
They also prefer soil that drains well. Water when the top part of the soil starts to dry, but avoid letting the pot sit in standing water.

✅ Final Thoughts
Overall, I’m really happy with this White Bird of Paradise. It arrived well-packed, already had good size, and only needed a little cleanup before it was ready to enjoy.
If you want a large indoor plant that gives you instant tropical impact, White Bird of Paradise is a good one to consider. It may not bloom indoors very often, but with leaves like this, I’m not too worried about that. Happy gardening, and keep it green.
