This plant has a reputation for being difficult, and honestly, that’s not wrong. But once you understand what it needs, you can build a setup that works consistently.

My 90 Gallon Paludarium Setup

This tank wasn’t originally built just for Heliamphora—it already had a full setup with water, substrate, and aquatic plants. I just adapted it to support the plant.

Here’s what’s going on inside the tank:

  • About 5 inches of water at the bottom
  • Eco-Complete substrate with rocks for structure
  • A mix of aquatic and semi-aquatic plants
  • Plants growing both underwater and above the waterline
  • A glass top that allows partial airflow

There are a few small fish in there (Peacock gudgeons), but honestly, this setup is about the plants.

Why Airflow Matters (More Than You Think)

One of the biggest mistakes people make with Heliamphora is treating them like sealed, stagnant terrarium plants.

That’s not how they grow in nature.

These plants come from high-altitude tepuis in Venezuela—places with constant wind, daily rain, fog, and moving air.

To replicate that, I added a small muffin fan in one corner of the tank.

It doesn’t blast the plant—it just creates a gentle breeze and keeps air moving. Combined with the gaps in the glass lid, this prevents stagnant, humid air from building up.

Pot Setup: Keeping Roots Wet but Not Flooded

This is the part that really matters.

Heliamphora like constant moisture—but they do not like sitting in water.

Here’s exactly how I set mine up:

  • 6-inch root maker style pot (with side holes)
  • Filled about 3/4 with straight coco coir
  • Original root ball placed in the center
  • Backfilled with more coco coir
  • Top layer finished with moss from the shipment

The pot sits in the tank water, but the root zone is 2–3 inches above the waterline.

What that does is create a wicking system—the plant stays consistently moist without the roots being submerged.

That’s the balance you’re aiming for.

Recreating Tepui Conditions Indoors

If you want Heliamphora to do well long-term, you have to understand where they come from.

These plants grow on tepuis—high-altitude, flat-topped mountains in Venezuela that sit anywhere from 2,000 to 10,000 feet above sea level.

Even though they’re near the equator, the environment is nothing like a typical tropical jungle.

  • Constant cloud cover and fog
  • Daily rainfall
  • Cool temperatures, especially at night
  • Strong wind and constant airflow
  • Nutrient-poor, sandy or rocky soils

When you look at that list, a typical sealed terrarium setup actually gets it wrong.

That’s why I built this system with airflow, open gaps, and moving moisture instead of just trapping humidity.

Lighting: Strong but Not Harsh

Heliamphora need bright light, but not the kind of intense, direct heat you’d get from full sun through glass.

In nature, they’re getting filtered light through clouds and mist. That’s what you’re trying to mimic.

In my setup:

  • Light is bright and consistent
  • It’s spread across the entire tank
  • There’s no intense hot spot cooking the plant

You’ll know you’ve got it right when:

  • Pitchers develop good color (often red tones)
  • Growth stays compact and upright
  • The plant doesn’t stretch or lean

Too much light and heat together can stress the plant. Too little light and it just won’t thrive.

I use an old 250-watt COB grow light originally used for cannabis. It’s adjustable so my plant is not blasted and this plant will grow at 400 μmol when mature.

Why I Use Coco Coir (and Skip Everything Else)

A lot of mixes for carnivorous plants include peat, perlite, vermiculite, or sand.

I don’t use any of that here.

I go with straight coco coir, and there are a few reasons why:

  • It drains well but still holds moisture
  • It doesn’t compact like peat can
  • It wicks water efficiently from below
  • It’s easier to manage in a terrarium setup

Since the pot is sitting in a wicking environment, I don’t need additives to improve drainage. The structure of the system handles that.

This also keeps things simple—fewer variables, fewer problems.

Temperature: Why Cooler Roots Matter

This is another area where Heliamphora are different from a lot of other carnivorous plants.

They don’t like heat, especially around the roots.

Because this plant is sitting in a paludarium with water at the base, the system naturally helps regulate temperature. Water absorbs heat and stabilizes the environment.

On top of that:

  • The fan keeps air moving
  • The open top prevents heat buildup
  • The substrate stays consistently moist, not hot and dry

You don’t need extreme cold—just avoid letting the plant cook. Stable, slightly cooler conditions are what you’re aiming for.

Heliamphora Godzilla thrives at 70–75°F days and 55–65°F nights, with root temperatures ideally held between 60–68°F. Prolonged heat above 80°F slows growth, and temperatures above 90°F can be fatal.

Heliamphora Humidity Levels

Heliamphora thrive at 70–85% humidity with strong airflow. They tolerate 50–60% in open‑air conditions, but pitcher size and vigor improve dramatically above 70%. High humidity is safe as long as temperatures stay cool and air movement prevents stagnation.

Humidity vs Airflow: Finding the Balance

This is probably the biggest balancing act in the whole setup.

Heliamphora like humidity—but they also like air movement.

If you seal everything up tight, you’ll get humidity… but you’ll also get stagnant air, which leads to problems.

If you go too open, you lose humidity and the plant can dry out.

The solution is what this setup does:

  • Open gaps in the lid for passive airflow
  • A small fan for active air movement
  • Water below to maintain humidity

That combination creates a stable, breathable environment—and that’s exactly what these plants are used to in the wild.

How Heliamphora Godzilla Will Grow in This Setup

Right now, this plant is sitting around 10–12 inches tall, with three solid pitchers and a fourth starting.

That’s already a good sign after shipping, but the real question is what happens next.

If everything stays stable, you can expect:

  • Slow but steady pitcher growth
  • Larger, more upright pitchers over time
  • Gradual increase in overall height and spread

Most growers report this plant hitting 16–24 inches indoors, and in ideal conditions it can push toward 3 feet tall.

That’s where things get interesting… because it’s going to outgrow most setups eventually.

Will It Outgrow This Terrarium?

Short answer: probably, yes.

Right now, the plant is already only a few inches from the top of the tank.

As it grows, I’ve got a couple options:

  • Lower the plant into a shorter pot
  • Open up the glass top and let it grow out
  • Move it to a taller or different setup entirely

This is something you want to think about before you commit to a plant like this.

What Could Go Wrong (and How to Avoid It)

Even with a good setup, there are a few things that can cause problems.

Overheating

If heat builds up inside the tank, the plant can decline quickly. Keep airflow moving and avoid strong heat sources.

Stagnant Air

No airflow = fungal issues and poor growth. The small fan and open gaps solve this.

Waterlogged Roots

These plants like moisture, not standing water. Keep the root zone above the waterline and let the substrate wick moisture up.

Weak Lighting

If the plant isn’t getting enough light, growth slows and pitchers weaken. Bright, consistent light is key.
