Tank Overview: What’s In This Carnivorous Setup
This is the first carnivorous terrarium I set up, and at the time of this update it’s right around a year old. Overall, it’s been a fun project and it’s doing “pretty good” — which, if you’ve ever kept carnivorous plants indoors, you know is a win.
The tank is a mixed setup, so you’re dealing with different light and moisture preferences under one LED. Here’s what’s growing in it right now:
- Pinguicula (Butterworts / “Pings”) – a couple plants, and one of them flowered recently with pink blooms

- Drosera (Sundew) – actively feeding and doing the classic “curl around the food” response

- Venus flytrap – growing and preparing to flower, even though it isn’t an ideal long-term indoor plant

- Nepenthes truncata – centered in the tank, producing pitchers but getting more light than it would choose

- Volunteer fern – not planned, but it popped up and has stayed
If you’re building a similar tank, the big takeaway is that mixed carnivorous setups can work indoors — but you’ll always be managing compromises. The plants don’t all want the same thing, so your job is to keep everyone within their “tolerable range” rather than chasing perfection for one plant.
The Butterworts: Low Drama, High Reward
The butterworts have been some of the easiest growers in this tank. One of them flowered a couple weeks before this update, and the blooms were a nice bonus — pretty pink flowers that made the whole tank look more alive.
In a mixed setup, pings are often the “steady” plant. They don’t need constant feeding, they don’t take over the tank, and they tend to tolerate indoor conditions better than people expect.
The Sundew: Watching It Eat Never Gets Old
The Drosera is doing what sundews do best: grabbing food and curling around it. If you’ve never seen that response up close, it’s one of the coolest parts of keeping carnivorous plants. Something lands on the sticky leaf, then over time the fronds curl in, wrap the food, and digest it.
In this tank, the sundew shows me pretty quickly whether the environment is staying in the right zone. When the sundew looks active and “dewy,” you’re usually doing a lot of things right.
The Venus Flytrap: Doing Fine, But Still the Odd One Out
The flytrap has been okay so far, but this is the plant in the tank that comes with the biggest asterisk. Venus flytraps aren’t really indoor plants long-term, because they naturally want a dormant season. Even if yours stays alive indoors, it may not thrive year after year without some kind of rest period.
At the time of this update, the flytrap looks like it’s ready to flower. If you’re growing flytraps mainly for strength and traps (not seeds), cutting the flower stalk is usually the smarter play. Flowering takes energy, and in a tank setup you’re already asking the plant to live outside its ideal seasonal rhythm.
The Big Challenge in Mixed Tanks: Light Compromises
If you’re running a mixed carnivorous terrarium, this is the problem you’ll probably run into sooner or later: one plant wants less light, while the others want more.
In this tank, the Nepenthes truncata is the plant that prefers lower light than the rest. The pings, sundew, and especially the flytrap all benefit from stronger lighting. If you dim the tank to make the Nepenthes “happy,” the others start to suffer.
So the tank stays bright — and the Nepenthes adapts.
One obvious sign of that adaptation is leaf color. The truncata leaves picked up a reddish tinge from the LED intensity. That doesn’t automatically mean damage, but it’s your indicator that the plant is sitting on the high side of what it would naturally choose.

Light Adjustments and Plant Positioning
The biggest long-term issue in this tank has been light balance. Not overall brightness — balance.
The sundew, butterworts, and Venus flytrap all benefit from fairly strong LED light to stay compact and active. The Nepenthes, on the other hand, prefers something a little softer. If I reduce the light for the Nepenthes, the others start stretching or slowing down.
So instead of lowering the light across the whole tank, I adjusted the plant.
Lowering the Nepenthes Instead of Dimming the Tank
Originally, the Nepenthes pot sat higher in the tank. Over time, I lowered it deeper into the enclosure so it would sit a little farther from the LED panel.
That small change reduced intensity just enough to take the edge off without sacrificing the rest of the plants. The leaves still show a reddish tinge, which tells me it’s on the high side of acceptable light — but growth has continued and pitchers are forming.
If you’re running a mixed carnivorous tank, this is often the smarter move: adjust height and placement before you adjust output.
Targeted Shade Instead of Global Changes
I also added a small section of shade cloth directly under the LED in the center of the tank. Not over everything — just enough to soften the hotspot.
That helped reduce glare on the Nepenthes without dimming the light for the flytrap and sundews. In enclosed systems, small directional tweaks often work better than big environmental swings.
Feeding and Energy Management
Simple Feeding With Fish Food
I’ve fed the plants lightly — maybe three times over the year — using small amounts of fish food. Nothing complicated. Just enough to stimulate response.
The sundew reacts immediately. The leaves curl around the food, digest it, and reopen later. It’s one of the easiest indicators that the plant is active and functioning properly.
The flytrap has also been fed occasionally, and the Nepenthes pitchers have received small feedings as well. None of these plants need heavy feeding in a terrarium, especially if small insects occasionally find their way in.
Removing Flytrap Flowers
The Venus flytrap began pushing up a flower stalk around the one-year mark. Indoors, especially without a true dormancy period, flowering can drain energy from the plant.
If your goal is stronger traps rather than seed production, cutting the flower stalk early is usually the better choice. It redirects energy back into growth instead of reproduction.
In a mixed indoor tank, you’re already asking the flytrap to operate outside its ideal seasonal cycle. Conserving energy matters.
Water Monitoring and Substrate Conditions
All of the pots in this tank are buried in substrate, so I can’t just lift them to check moisture levels. To solve that, I installed a simple water gauge in the corner of the enclosure.
That gauge tells me when the lower layer needs water without guessing. Carnivorous plants don’t tolerate drying out well, but they also shouldn’t be swimming constantly either.
The only part of the tank that hasn’t gone the way I expected is the moss. I’ve struggled to get consistent moss growth. Some patches establish, but discoloration shows up over time. I have fresh sphagnum coming, and that may help stabilize the surface layer.

The Most Stable Plants After One Year
After a full year, the butterworts have probably been the most consistent performers. They tolerated the light, handled the feeding schedule, and even produced flowers. In a mixed indoor tank, that kind of stability matters.
The sundew has also done well. As long as it produces dew and curls around food, you know the environment is within range. It’s a good “indicator plant” in a shared setup.
The Ongoing Compromise Plant
The Nepenthes is still the plant that requires the most adjustment. It’s growing, it’s producing pitchers, but it lives slightly outside its preferred light zone. The red-tinged leaves tell that story.
It hasn’t declined — it’s adapted. That’s an important distinction. In a mixed tank, sometimes adaptation is the goal, not perfection.
The Venus Flytrap Reality Check
The flytrap has survived indoors so far, but long term, it’s still the least naturally suited to this setup. Venus flytraps evolved with a winter dormancy period. Without that rest, they can slowly weaken over multiple seasons.
If I were designing this tank again strictly for long-term indoor success, I might skip the flytrap and focus on species that don’t require dormancy.
Unexpected Developments
The Volunteer Fern
A fern appeared on its own, likely from a stray spore. I didn’t plan it, but I left it. In a closed environment, small natural additions can actually help moderate microclimates.
Over time, that fern may provide mild shading and visual layering. Tanks often evolve beyond the original design — and sometimes that’s a good thing.
Moss Challenges
Moss has been the one element I haven’t fully dialed in. Some areas establish, others discolor. That’s usually tied to airflow, light intensity, and moisture consistency. Fresh sphagnum may stabilize the surface layer moving forward.
If I Were Starting This Tank Again
- Design lighting zones from the beginning instead of adjusting later
- Choose species with similar light needs
- Plan vertical clearance for long-term Nepenthes growth
- Install water monitoring from day one
- Decide early whether to accommodate dormancy species like flytraps
That doesn’t mean this setup failed. It didn’t. It’s stable and still growing. But after a year, you see more clearly where compromises were made.
